United Way of South Sarasota County is the lead agency for Sarasota County’s COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), leading the region’s Disaster Recovery & Community Resiliency Program. We coordinate local government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community groups to help families rebuild after natural disasters like Hurricanes Ian, Idalia, Milton, Debby, and Helen.
Our mission is to restore stability to residents — especially those in the ALICE population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) — who are often hardest hit. Working in partnership with Volunteer Florida, FEMA, Sarasota County Emergency Management, and others, we provide disaster case management, home repairs and rebuilding, volunteer coordination, and emergency financial assistance. Each recovery plan is tailored so families can safely return home, regain independence, and rebuild long-term stability.
Beyond disaster response, our resiliency efforts prepare Sarasota County for future crises. We strengthen nonprofit networks, improve emergency systems, train COAD partners, and maintain sustainable support structures. When you support United Way of South Sarasota County, you’re not just helping neighbors recover—you’re building a stronger, more disaster-resilient Sarasota County.
